Effect of immediate dentin sealing and surface conditioning on the microtensile bond strength of resin-based composite to dentin

Operative Dentistry May 22, 2019

van den Breemer CRG, et al. - Researchers evaluated resin-based composite (RBC) for the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) to dentin after different immediate dentin sealing (IDS) strategies and surface-conditioning (SC) methods and on two water storage times. They randomly divided human molars (n=48) into eight experimental groups involving four different IDS strategies—IDS-1L with one layer of adhesive, IDS-2L with two layers of adhesive, IDS-F with one layer of adhesive and one layer of flowable RBC, and DDS (delayed dentin sealing) with no layer of adhesive (control)—and two different SC methods—SC-P with pumice rubbing and SC-PC with pumice rubbing followed by tribochemical silica coating. The one-week μTBS specimens showed no significant differences for IDS strategy and SC methods as per two-way analysis of variance. However, there appeared a statistically significant interaction between IDS strategy and SC methods. On evaluating the six-month specimen, they noted no significant difference in μTBS for SC and SC/IDS interaction, however, they differed significantly regarding the μTBS of the IDS strategies. For tribochemical silica-coated IDS, aging showed no significant effect on μTBS, however, μTBS showed a highly significant difference depending on the IDS strategy. In addition, there was borderline statistically significant interaction of IDS and aging. For all experimental groups, the specimens failed mainly at the adhesive-dentin interface. Dentin exposure during clinical procedures for indirect restorations benefits from the application of IDS, which was shown to result in higher bond strength.
