Effect of continuous infusion of hypertonic saline vs standard care on 6-month neurological outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury: The COBI randomized clinical trial
JAMA May 30, 2021
Roquilly A, Moyer JD, Huet O, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the effect of continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solution on neurological outcome at 6 months in patients with traumatic brain injury. They conducted a randomized clinical trial including 370 adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Outcomes revealed correlation of treatment with continuous infusion of 20% hypertonic saline, vs standard care, with an odds ratio for better neurological outcomes (based on the Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale) of 1.02 after 6 months; this was however not statistically significant. This suggests no significantly better neurological status at 6 months among patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury in correlation with receiving treatment with continuous infusion of 20% hypertonic saline vs standard care.
