Effect of aspirin vs placebo on the prevention of depression in older people: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Oct 10, 2020
Berk M, Woods RL, Nelson MR, et al. - Researchers here examined how low-dose aspirin influences the risk of depression in healthy older adults. They conducted a clinical trial where 19,114 older adults in Australia and the United States were randomly allocated to receive aspirin (100 mg daily) or placebo; median (interquartile range) follow-up was 4.7 (3.5-5.6) years. As seen by measurements taken at any of the postrandomization annual visits, there was no lower rate of prevalent depression among those taking low-dose aspirin (100 mg daily) vs those taking a placebo. This suggests no preventive effect of low-dose aspirin against depression in healthy older adults.
