Early weight gain after stopping smoking: A predictor of overall large weight gain? A single-site retrospective cohort study

BMJ Open Dec 20, 2018

Pankova A, et al. – Given that most people gain weight upon smoking cessation, researchers investigated whether early large post-cessation weight gain predicts overall large weight gain in this retrospective cohort study. A full 1,050 patients of the 3,537 patients treated between 2005 and 2015 were continuous 1-year follow-up abstainers and formed the cohort of the current report. Weight was measured before cessation of smoking and at each visit post-cessation. According to results, lower body mass index and increased appetite at 3 months post-cessation were associated with greater weight gain; nicotine replacement therapy, on the other hand, was associated with less weight gain at 1-year follow-up. Overall, smokers who quit and gain a greater amount of weight early after cessation are not more likely to gain excessively at 1 year.
