Early prediction of preeclampsia and small-for-gestational-age via multi-marker model in Chinese pregnancies: A prospective screening study

BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Aug 25, 2019

Zhang J, Han L, Li W, et al. - Researchers examined whether a multi-marker screening model is valuable for the prediction of preeclampsia and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) in the first trimester particularly among the Chinese population. Among 3270 pregnancies that met the inclusion criteria, first-trimester screening of preeclampsia and SGA were performed. Early preeclampsia developed in eight cases (0.24%) and late preeclampsia (1.07%) was diagnosed in 35 cases. According to ROC curves, there appeared better performance of posterior risks vs prior risks in terms of preeclampsia, especially in early preeclampsia. Detection rates of early and late preeclampsia were 87.50 and 48.57% and detection rates of early and late SGA were 41.67 and 28.00%, respectively, at a 10% false-positive rate. In cases with preeclampsia, they observed much higher detection rates for SGA than those in absence of it. These findings suggest the possible utility of combined screening model for predicting early preeclampsia in Chinese pregnancies. Moreover, they observed a strong correlation between the performance of SGA screening by same protocol and preeclampsia.
