Early enteral nutrition prevent acute pancreatitis from deteriorating in obese patients

Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 10, 2019

Jin Z, et al. - In this prospective randomized control trial, researchers identified a potential strategy to prevent acute pancreatitis (AP) from deteriorating in obese patients. Individuals with moderately severe AP or severe AP were divided by obesity index visceral fat obesity (VFO) into the group of VFO and non-VFO. Investigators found that VFO has been a risk factor in worsening AP. Early enteral nutrition (EEN) prevented the development of pancreatic necrotic infection in VFO patients, the mechanism of which could be linked to inhibiting excessive inflammatory reactions, adjusting the imbalance of inflammatory response, and alleviating intestinal mucosal ischemia. In obese patients, the potential strategy, EEN, has been able to prevent AP from deteriorating.
