Does urethral length affect continence outcomes following robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP)
BMC Urology Feb 06, 2020
Lin D, O’Callaghan M, David R, et al. - In this study, the impact of pre-operative membranous urethral length (MUL) on 12-month continence outcomes in men having robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) was determined. Researchers utilize the South Australian Prostate Cancer Clinical Outcomes Collaborative (SA-PCCOC) database, to distinguish 602 individuals who had undergone RALP by a high volume surgeon. In this study, the observed median MUL was 14.6 mm. No relationship was found between MUL and baseline continence. The correlation was found between MUL and continence at 12 months post RALP. The MUL was correlated with a return to continence at 12 months after RALP in men who were continent before surgery. There was a relationship between MUL and change in continence after surgery. Over 12 months post RALP, MUL had no impact on baseline continence but had a positive and significant relationship with continence outcomes.
