Does prehospital spinal immobilization influence inhospital decision to obtain imaging after trauma?
Injury Mar 03, 2020
Drain J, et al. - Researchers examined the frequency of performing cervical spine imaging in patients with a cervical collar vs those who arrived in the emergency department without a collar. They performed stratification with respect to acuity (1,2, or 3), mechanism, and known injury cephalad to clavicles, defined as pain, wounds, or hematomas. Record of cervical spine imaging findings was made. The analysis revealed a higher likelihood of receiving cervical spine imaging in trauma patients arriving in the emergency department wearing a cervical collar. They identified proven clinical assessments to assess a cervical spine as enough to dismiss the necessity for cervical CT imaging. Hence excessive use of hospital imaging resources, finances, and time could be prevented with proven clinical assessment methods.
