Does pre-operative opioid use increase the risk of early revision total hip arthroplasty?

Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 09, 2018

Bedard NA, et al. - In this trial, the impact of preoperative opioid use on the risk of early total hip arthroplasty (THA) revision was studied. An increased risk of early revision surgery was independently predicted by the opioid use within three months preceding THA. Obesity and a diagnosis of anxiety/depression served as the additional, independent predictors of early revision. In risk adjustment models, factors such as these would need consideration while assessing the quality of care or implementing bundled payment initiatives.
