Does neck pain as chief complaint influence the outcome of cervical total disc replacement?
European Spine Journal Jul 12, 2019
Finkenstaedt S, et al. - One hundred and fifty-nine consecutive patients were recruited with the main complaint of neck pain (NP), arm/shoulder pain (AP) or neurological deficits (ND) in a retrospective study, by the researchers to examine whether outcomes following cervical total disc replacement (cTDR) were affected by preoperative neck pain as the chief complaint. From prior to surgery to 24 months following surgery, the main complaint groups did not differ in relation to their baseline Core Outcome Measures Index scores or their decreases in the score. Among the groups (NP, AP, ND group), no difference in the percentage of patients reporting a “good global treatment outcome” at 24 months postoperatively was noted. Moreover, the findings were constant when possible confounders in multiple regression were controlled. Hence, having NP as opposed to AP or ND as a preoperative chief complaint had no meaningful influence on clinical outcome after cTDR.
