Does modality matter? Palliative care units associated with more cost-avoidance than consultations
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Aug 30, 2017
May P, et al. – In this study, experts sought to evaluate the impact of palliative care consultations (PCC) and care in a palliative care unit (PCU) on the cost of care, in comparison with usual care (UC) only and in comparison with each other. Compared to usual care, both PCU and PCC were correlated with lower hospital costs. Compared to PCC, PCU was correlated with a greater cost–avoidance effect except where both interventions were provided early in the hospitalization. For appropriate patients, both timely provision of palliative care and creation of more PCUs could decrease hospital costs.
