Does methylprednisolone improve postoperative outcomes after mandibular third molar surgery? A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dec 04, 2018
Nagori SA, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if methylprednisolone (MP) administered via any route improves postoperative outcomes (pain, trismus, and oedema) following mandibular third molar surgery. The PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL and Google Scholar databases were searched electronically to identify studies published in English by January 2018. According to the result of this systematic review and meta-analysis, MP given via any route improves oedema significantly in the early postoperative period but has no impact on late postoperative oedema. During the early postoperative period, oral and intra-masseteric MP also seems to reduce pain and trismus. In addition, researchers suggested that oral MP can reduce late postoperative pain, while intra-masseteric MP can improve the outcome of late trismus.
