Osteoporosis International Oct 22, 2021

Yazdanpanah Z, Beigrezaei Z, Mohseni-Takalloo S, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain the effects of exercise in conjunction with weight-loss diets on bone health.

  • The systematic review included 14 eligible controlled clinical trials in adults investigating the effect of adding exercise to a weight-loss diet vs a calorie-matched weight-loss diet without exercise on bone measures.

  • In conjunction with hypocaloric diets, resistance exercise was reported inducing positive effects on total BMD when compared with an energy restrictive diet alone.

  • Overall only resistance exercise appears to have beneficial effects on total BMD during a calorie-restricted diet in adults.
