Does attendance of a prenatal education course reduce rates of caesarean section on maternal request?: A questionnaire study in a tertiary women hospital in Shanghai, China
BMJ Open Jun 30, 2019
Gao Y, et al. - Through 564 questionnaire study, the researchers interrogated the association between maternal characteristics, attendance at a prenatal education course and a cesarean section on maternal request. Age, parity, gravida, delivery mode, educational level, residence status, living condition and attendance of prenatal education course were assessed. On maternal request, 46% of women delivered by cesarean section. A significant association of maternal age and residence status with a cesarean section on maternal request was observed. In comparison to women who lived outside of Shanghai, 75% more women who stayed in Shanghai went through a cesarean section on maternal request. Although, in women who visited a prenatal education course, a marked decline in the number of cesarean sections on maternal request was noted. Also, no significant correlation between attendance of a prenatal education course and the other maternal aspects studied were ascertained. Hence, maternal age was linked to an enhanced risk of cesarean section on maternal request. Also, prenatal education course significantly lessened the rate of cesarean section on maternal request for women of all ages. Therefore, to diminish the rate of cesarean section, the publicity of a prenatal education course was an important tool for China.
