DOAC vs VKA after recent ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
Annals of Neurology Apr 18, 2019
Seiffge DJ, et al. - In 4,912 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and recent cerebral ischemia (<3 months before starting oral anticoagulation) and a minimum follow-up of 3 months from seven prospective cohort studies, researchers compared results following treatment with direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) and vitamin K antagonists (VKA). Findings revealed that DOAC treatment that was started early after recent AF-related cerebral ischemia was related to a lower risk of poor clinical outcomes vs VKA, primarily due to lower intracerebral hemorrhage risks as there were no differences seen for the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke and mortality.
