Disparities in access to high-volume surgeons within high-volume hospitals for hysterectomy
Obstetrics and Gynecology Jul 29, 2021
Knisely A, Huang Y, Melamed A, et al. - Access to high-volume surgeons vs low-volume surgeons who perform hysterectomies within high-volume hospitals was examined. In addition, comparison was performed with respect to perioperative morbidity and mortality between high-volume and low-volume surgeons within these centers. Researchers identified a total of 300,586 patients cared for by 5,505 surgeons at 59 hospitals. More frequently Black women and women having Medicare insurance received treatment from low-volume surgeons vs high-volume surgeons. Overall observations revealed the existence of socioeconomic disparities in access to high-volume surgeons within high-volume hospitals for hysterectomy. Risk for perioperative morbidity and mortality was recorded to be substantially greater for patients who undergo hysterectomy at a high-volume hospital by a low-volume surgeon.
