Direct and indirect economic and health consequences related to sarcoidosis in Denmark: A national register-based study
Respiratory Medicine Apr 15, 2019
Sikjær MG, et al. - Via identifying patients with sarcoidosis in the Danish National Patient Registry (1998–2010), the overall economic burden of sarcoidosis in Denmark was assessed by researchers before and after initial diagnosis. In this analysis, 9,119 patients with sarcoidosis and 36,432 matching controls were identified. Sarcoidosis patients had significantly higher rates of health-related contacts, higher usage of medication and more received unemployment and social payments than controls. Eleven years before and 11 years after the diagnosis of sarcoidosis, health costs were elevated. Findings suggested that sarcoidosis has a socioeconomic impact on adults, particularly during their primary work and years, and this is apparently several years before and after diagnosis. Investigators found that women in particular between the ages of 45 and 59 have a lower earning income. Public transfer income was higher five years before and nine years after diagnosis. The authors advocate that further research should concentrate on identifying the proportion of sarcoidosis patients that imposes the greatest economic burden. Increased focus on early diagnosis and management of the disease can lessen the sarcoidosis socioeconomic burden.
