Differential vascular effects of aspirin in people with type 2 diabetes without cardiovascular disease and matched controls without diabetes

Diabetic Medicine Apr 26, 2019

Vernstrøm L, et al. - In this study, researchers ascertained if the effect of low-dose aspirin in individuals with type 2 diabetes on endothelium-dependent vasodilation and arterial stiffness differs from a matched control group. They analyzed both acute and chronic effects, as well as effects over the 24-hour interval of dosing. The study sample consisted of 21 participants with type 2 diabetes and 21 age- and sex-matched controls. In participants with diabetes, aspirin had a reduced immediate effect on endothelium-dependent vasodilation. After 1 week of treatment, both groups had improved endothelial function. According to findings, the effect of aspirin on endothelial function may decline in individuals with type 2 diabetes during a 24-hour dosing interval.
