Dietary practices among children with early childhood caries and the associated factors: A qualitative study
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry May 28, 2021
Suprabha BS, Shenoy R, Mahabala KY, et al. - In this descriptive qualitative study, researchers described the parental perspective of the dietary habits of children with early childhood caries (ECC). Parents of children with ECC who were receiving routine dental care were among those who took part in the study. Data were collected through focus groups using an interview guide and were analyzed manually using the content analysis method. Five focus groups with a total of 27 participants were held. Parents believed that a variety of factors influenced their children's snacking habits, including family environment, peers, television or internet commercials, and food affordability. Parents may lack self-efficacy and feel pressured by their children, the media, and the environment they live in, making it difficult for them to translate their knowledge into action to modify their children's diet. Parental motivational interviewing, as well as government and school policies aimed at reducing sugary food consumption, are required.
