Diet quality and cardiovascular disease risk in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus: The Women's Health Initiative

Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 26, 2019

Hirahatake KM, Jiang L, Wong ND, et al. - Using prospective data from the Women's Health Initiative, researchers analyzed 5,809 women with prevalent type 2 diabetes mellitus at baseline in order to determine the link between diet quality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in these women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. They found a lower CVD risk in correlation with dietary patterns that emphasize a higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts/seeds, legumes, a high unsaturated:saturated fat ratio, and a lower consumption of red and processed meats, added sugars, and sodium, in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, they noted that the risk of incident CVD in these women was lower in relation to self-reported dietary consumptions more closely aligned with Mediterranean, Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, and American Diabetes Association dietary patterns, whereas, no link was found between a Paleolithic dietary pattern and CVD risk in this population.
