Diagnostic potential of intracardiac echocardiography in patients with suspected prosthetic valve endocarditis

Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography Oct 11, 2019

Østergaard L, et al. - Whether further examination of patients with suspected prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) and inconclusive results on transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) provides any diagnostic benefit was investigated in this study enrolling 38 patients suspected of having PVE. Findings revealed the change of diagnosis to definite PVE in half of the patients when ICE was used for further examination. In cases in which ICE did not confirm PVE, a low frequency of relapse was reported. There were no vascular complications reported in association with the procedure, whereas six of the patients (16%) had groin hematomas, which did not need intervention and had no sequelae. As far as the duration of antibiotic therapy and surgical intervention are concerned in the treatment of these patients, clinicians may derive guidance through ICE.
