Diagnostic accuracy of PET/CT scan of the head, neck and chest for giant cell arteritis: The double-blinded giant cell arteritis and pet scan (GAPS) study

Arthritis & Rheumatology Mar 15, 2019

Sammel AM, et al. - In this study, researchers analyzed 64 cases to determine the accuracy of PET/CT scan of the head, neck, and chest for giant cell arteritis (GCA) diagnosis. A fraction of 58 candidates underwent temporal artery biopsy (TAB) and 12 of them were positive for GCA. The sensitivity (Sn) of PET/CT was 92% and specificity (Sp), 85% when compared with TAB. They observed 20% of subjects with clinically associated incidental findings infections and malignancies. 42% of TAB positive patients were recorded with aortitis. They suggested it as a first-line test for GCA. Hence, they preferred PET/CT over TAB in identifying vasculitis mimics and aortitis.
