Diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and living with a chronic condition: Participatory study

da Silva JA, et al. - In this participatory research with a qualitative approach focusing on reflexivity, researchers examined people with diabetes mellitus in order to gain insights into how these subjects deal with the recognition of the chronic condition in their health care practices. They found that the acceptance or denial of the illness was strongly under the impact of the emotional aspects of subjects diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Such an impact resulted in interference with their personal adherence to treatment. They also realized that the personal autonomy of the subjects must be absolutely respected and encouraged.
