Development of a fall-risk assessment profile for community-dwelling older adults by using the National Health Interview Survey in Taiwan

BMC Public Health Feb 20, 2020

Chen PL, et al. - Utilizing data from the National Health Interview Survey in Taiwan, researchers constructed a fall-risk evaluation profile for community-dwelling older adults given falls remain a global health concern among older adults and result in a considerable burden on medical systems. Participants included individuals aged > 65 years. Eight predictors, namely, female gender, living alone, incontinence, perceived unhealthiness, perceived pain, hospital admission in the past year, low activity of daily living scores, and low mobility function scores, were incorporated in the fall-risk assessment profile. A sensitivity of 75.16% and a specificity of 52.75% were yielded by the model for the prediction of falls at a total risk-score cutoff point of 6 (range 0–17). The model developed in this study may be used as an evaluation instrument for the recognition of older adults with a high risk of falling, and evaluation outcomes can be applied to facilitate community-based intervention.
