Development and validation of a risk prediction model for severe hypoglycemia in adult patients with type 2 diabetes: A nationwide population-based cohort study

Clinical Epidemiology Oct 30, 2018

Han K, et al. - Using the National Health Insurance Database (DB) in Korea, researchers developed and validated a model to predict the risk of severe hypoglycemia (SH) in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Baseline and follow-up data from patients who received health evaluations from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2010 (n=1,676,885) were studied as development (n=1,173,820) and validation (n=503,065) cohorts. Findings revealed that female sex, older age, longer duration of diabetes, low body mass index, use of insulin or multiple classes of glucose-lowering medications, drinking, current smoking status, lack of exercise, presence of hypertension or chronic kidney disease, previous SH history, multiple comorbidities, and low or high glucose levels were independent predictors of increased risk of SH in T2DM. In adult patients with T2DM, this 14-variable prediction model for SH events might be a valuable tool to identify high-risk patients and guide prevention of SH.
