Development and validation of a predictive model for periodontitis using NHANES 2011–2012 data
Journal of Clinical Periodontology Mar 27, 2019
Montero E, et al. - With data from the 2011–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle, investigators evaluated 3017 cases of age >30 years to quantify a predictive model for moderate-to-severe periodontitis in the USA population. Using CDC/AAP classification, they noted 37.1% and 13.2%, the prevalence of moderate and severe periodontitis, respectively. They found periodontitis a frequent disease in North American individuals with significantly higher prevalence in pre-diabetic or diabetic cases. They suggested the employment of model including age, gender, ethnicity, HbA1c and smoking habit as a safe screening tool for periodontitis in primary medical care centers to promote referral of cases at risk for further periodontal examination and diagnosis.
