Development and validation of a prediction model for mortality and adverse outcomes among patients with peripheral eosinopenia on admission for Clostridium difficile infection
JAMA Oct 15, 2018
Kulaylat AS, et al. - In order to predict inpatient mortality in patients with Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), experts constructed a model using clinical indices readily available at the time of hospital admission, including peripheral eosinophil counts. A simple, widely available, inexpensive model predicting CDI severity and mortality to identify at-risk patients at the time of admission was described in the findings. As observed in a subgroup of analysis of patients presenting without initial tachycardia or hypotension, they noted a significant increase in the odds of inpatient mortality only solely among those with undetectable admission eosinophil counts, but not those with an elevated white blood cell count.
