Depth of invasion alone as a prognostic factor in low-risk early-stage oral cavity carcinoma

The Laryngoscope Jan 08, 2019

Kozak MM, et al. - Investigators evaluated 560 patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) treated between 2003 and2013 to assess the importance of increasing depth of invasion (DOI) as the single risk determinant for the recurrence in cases with low-risk early-stage OCSCC. They analyzed pathology specimens to confirm the proper measurement of DOI and identified the predictive factors for recurrence and progression-free survival (PFS) as well as overall survival (OS). They observed increasing DOI as a marker for poorer PFS and OS. Along with it, DOI ≥ 4 mm did not prognosticate for the increased frequency of local, regional, or distant relapse in candidates treated with surgery alone when high-risk pathologic features were absent.
