Depressive symptoms and dietary non-adherence among end stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy: Systematic review
BMC Nephrology Dec 04, 2019
Gebrie MH, et al. - Researchers performed this systematic review to synthesize the quantitative proof concerning the link between depressive symptoms and dietary non adherence in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving hemodialysis. They identified only relevant quantitative studies published between 2001 and 2016 in PubMed, CINHAL and Web of Science. Overall 141 publications were reviewed and 28 eligible articles were included in this analysis. Findings revealed a high prevalence of depressive symptoms and dietary non adherence in patients with ESRD receiving hemodialysis therapy. A significant link was revealed in approximately all of the articles that investigated the link between depressive symptoms and dietary non adherence. Experts found a positive link of reduced quality of life & raised morbidity and mortality, with depressive symptoms. An increase in dietary non adherence was more likely to be seen in relation to the presence of depressive symptoms.
