Depression, anxiety, and stress in parents of patients with retinoblastoma
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Collins MLZ, et al. - Among 138 parents of patients with retinoblastoma, researchers evaluated depression, anxiety, and stress and assessed the impact of unifocal compared with multifocal retinoblastoma. A cross-sectional, self-reported psychological evaluation was conducted at a tertiary care ocular oncology center for patients with retinoblastoma. Factors correlated with moderate or severe parental depression included prior depression history and factors for moderate or severe anxiety involved previous depression history, parent highest level of education at high school or less vs college or beyond, and parental report of “child developmental delay.” Many parents had low levels of depression, anxiety, or stress. Severe depression, however, is found more often in those whose children have a multifocal disease, and psychological function may be affected by the past history of depression and less education.
