Delivery room interventions for hypothermia in preterm neonates

JAMA May 29, 2021

Abiramalatha T, Ramaswamy VV, Bandyopadhyay T, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the thermal care intervention available in the delivery room that can best reduce neonatal hypothermia and improve clinical outcomes for preterm neonates born at 36 weeks’ gestation or less. They conducted a network meta-analysis of 34 trials involving 3,688 newborns and 9 interventions. Reduced risk of mortality before discharge and major brain injury while stabilizing the core body temperature immediately after birth was observed in correlation with a combination of plastic bag or wrap with a plastic cap or with heated humidified respiratory gas. For these interventions, certainty of evidence was moderate for temperature stabilization and low to moderate for other clinical outcomes. Overall findings suggest delivery room use of a plastic bag or wrap with a plastic cap or with heated humidified gas as relevant thermal care intervention for preterm neonates.
