American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Mar 31, 2019
Bretschneider CE, et al. - Using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database, researchers studied 45,139 subjects to estimate the incidence and factors correlated with lower urinary tract (LUT) complications identified in the immediate postoperative period following hysterectomy for benign gynecologic indications. Laparoscopic hysterectomy (43%) was the most commonly performed primary surgery followed by abdominal hysterectomy (27%). They noted 0.2% of the incidence of any LUT complication viz, ureteral obstructions (0.1%), ureteral fistulae (0.07%), and 28 bladder fistulae. A significant correlation of Black race, endometriosis, and previous abdominal surgery with the occurrence of any LUT complication identified in the immediate 30-day postoperative window.
