Daily use of bilateral custom-made ankle-foot orthoses for fall prevention in older adults: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Apr 30, 2019
Wang C, et al. - In this secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial, researchers determined if falls could be prevented by daily use of bilateral custom-made ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) for 12 months in older adults (aged 65 years and older) with concern about or at risk for falling (n = 44). They randomly allocated half of the participants to an intervention group (IG) and the other half to a control group (CG). The IG group received fitted walking shoes and bilateral custom-made AFOs and CG group only received fitted walking shoes. For fall prevention, a significant benefit of bilateral custom-made AFOs was not evident, in comparison to fitted walking shoes. However, significant reductions in falls were reported in the AFO users as compared to the preceding year.
