Cumulative incidence of osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum in preadolescent baseball players
Arthroscopy Jan 08, 2019
Matsuura T, et al. - In this observational study, authors analyzed 1275 school-aged baseball players aged from 6-11 years to classify the risk factors associated with capitellar osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and also to quantify the 1-year cumulative incidence OCD in preadolescents. They examined the players' elbow with ultrasonography and then underwent radiographic examination. They observed a 1.8% 1-year cumulative incidence among capitellar OCD cases. No association was found between capitellar OCD and factors like starting baseball at an earlier age, the number of years played, training hours per week, player position, and history of elbow pain. Players aged 10 to 11 years were notified with a significantly higher risk of capitellar OCD development as compared to those aged 6 to 9 years.
