Cost comparison of femoral distraction osteogenesis with external lengthening over a nail vs internal magnetic lengthening nail
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Apr 30, 2019
Richardson SS, et al. - In this study, authors assessed the cost of femoral distraction osteogenesis with external lengthening over a nail (LON) vs internal magnetic lengthening nail (MLN). They observed no difference in the length of femoral distraction. They recorded a shorter time to the union (136.7 vs 100.2 days) in cases treated with MLN and also underwent fewer surgeries (3.1 vs 2.1). They found implants more expensive for MLN when compared to LON which seemed to be offset by fewer procedures. They reported similar total costs of the 2 procedures. But an association was noticed between MLN and a decreased number of procedures as well as shorter time to union.
