Correlation between white blood cell count at admission and mortality in COVID-19 patients: A retrospective study

Zhu B, Feng X, Jiang C, et al. - This retrospective, single-center study was conducted to determine white blood cells (WBC) count among patients with confirmed coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) and a definite clinical outcome (death or discharge) who were admitted to the West Branch of Union Hospital in Wuhan. Researchers investigated risk factors of severe disease and in-hospital death for patients, with an aim to assist clinicians to detect cases on admission with poor prognosis. This study involved 163 patients including 33 death cases. In Kaplan-meier survival analysis, patients with WBC count ≥6.16 × 10^9/L were shown to have a significant decline of the cumulative survival rate. Findings revealed a significant correlation between WBC count at admission and death in COVID-19 patients. More attention should be paid to higher WBC count in the management of COVID-19.
