Correlation between sensorineural hearing loss and chronic otorrhea
ENT Journal Jun 05, 2019
Dobrianskyj FM, et al. - Researchers sought to clarify the correlation of chronic otorrhea with the sensorineural hearing loss in the affected ear. From the digitized archive of otological surgery files of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, they visually evaluated the ears of patients with chronic otorrhea and compared these with the normal contralateral ears. Further, they compared ears with otorrhea to ears with dry tympanic perforation of other patients. For the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz, they evaluated the sensorineural hearing threshold. They analyzed a total of 98 patients with chronic otorrhea and 60 with dry tympanic membrane perforation. A statistical study showed an association between sensorineural hearing loss and the chronic otorrhea, in comparison both with contralateral normal ears and with dry perforated ears of other patients. Ears with chronic otorrhea showed sensorineural hearing loss. No influence of the duration of otorrhea and the etiology of suppuration on the hearing loss was noted. Otorrhea in the great majority of cases began during childhood.
