Correlation between new OCT parameters and metamorphopsia in advanced stages of epiretinal membranes
Acta Ophthalmologica Jan 14, 2020
Alkabes M, et al. - In this work, the degree of metamorphopsia was evaluated using the M-CHARTS (M-SCORE) and was correlated with ectopic inner foveal layers (EIFL), ‘central bouquet’ abnormality (CBA) and central foveal thickness (CFT) as measured on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans in 60 eyes of 57 patients affected by epiretinal membrane (ERM) (stages 3 and 4). Thirty-seven eyes were diagnosed with ERM stages 3 and 23 eyes were diagnosed with ERM stage 4, respectively. Mean vertical and horizontal M-SCORE (M-V and M-H) were 0.64 ± 0.43 and 0.58 ± 0.37 standard deviations, respectively. Researchers observed a statistically significant correlation of mean M-SCORE with EIFL and CFT, but not with CBA. On separately analyzing the direction of metamorphopsia, they identified a significant correlation of mean vertical and horizontal M-SCORE with EIFL, but not with CBA thickness. The presence of CBA significantly influenced EIFL (CBA present, 158.29 ± 63.53 micron; CBA absent, 107.05 ± 94.13 micron). These results suggest that consideration could be given to EIFL, but not to CBA, as a good indicator for metamorphopsia in patients with advanced ERMs.
