Copeptin, pro-atrial natriuretic peptide and pro-adrenomedullin as markers of hypoxic stress in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A prospective intervention study

Respiratory Research Apr 24, 2021

Karakioulaki M, Grendelmeier P, Strobel W, et al. - Given that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) might result in oxidative stress, inflammation as well as increased circulating copeptin, pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (proANP) and pro-adrenomedullin (proADM) concentrations, researchers herein assessed if these prohormones concentrations are higher in patients experiencing OSA and if they might alter under continuous positive airway pressure therapy, representing as potential proxies for the diagnosis and treatment-response in OSA. This analysis involved 232 patients suffering from OSA and 30 patients without OSA. Findings showed a significant link of copeptin with the presence of OSA. A likely worth of proANP levels was suggested as a potential proxy for the acute response to non-invasive ventilation (12 h), while the long-term response (1 and 6 months) was reflected by proADM levels.
