Constipation, antiepileptic drugs, and gingivitis in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Jun 14, 2019
Ferreira ACFM, et al. - In children and adolescents (CA) with cerebral palsy (CP), researchers tested the assumption that constipation would be correlated with gingivitis and the use of an antiepileptic drug (AED). Participants in the study were 101 CA (aged 5-17 years), classified as constipated or not constipated. No differences were found between groups regarding gender, age, BMI, and fluid intake. According to this comparative study, mucosal inflammation evidenced by constipation and gingivitis was linked to the most neurologically compromised CAs under the use of GABA AED.
