Concentration of branched-chain amino acids is a strong risk marker for incident hypertension
Hypertension Oct 17, 2019
Flores-Guerrero JL, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective population-based cohort study to examine the relationship between branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and incident hypertension. From the PREVEND (Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-stage Disease) study, they measured plasma concentrations of BCAAs by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in 4,169 candidates. According to results, incident hypertension was ascertained in 924 individuals after a median follow-up of 8.6 years. An association was found between high plasma concentrations of BCAAs and an increased risk of newly developed hypertension. After adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and lipid profile, the correlation persisted.
