Complications of total hip arthroplasty in patients with ankylosing spondylitis
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 21, 2019
Ward MM - Researchers studied 2773 individuals with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and 107,341 subjects without AS who had total hip arthroplasty (THA) from 1999 to 2013. They found rare perioperative complications, 30-day complications, and local infections among all the candidates. They noted rare incidences of mechanical complications and revision arthroplasty in both groups. They recorded lower 90-day mortality among subjects with AS as compared to those without AS (0.36% vs 0.7%). They also noticed a higher discharge rate of cases with AS to a care facility and more expected to possess a long length of stay. They also concluded a lower prevalence of long stay at hospitals performed ≥100 THAs per year. Complications were not correlated with hospital volume.
