Complications of surgical approaches for osteosynthetic treatment of acetabular fractures:analysis of pitfalls and how to avoid them
Injury Mar 02, 2020
Küper MA, et al. - Considering the relevance of both, knowledge of anatomical structures and possible risks of the different approaches, for the planning of the surgical treatment of acetabular fractures, researchers assessed all patients with acetabular fractures, treated in their Level I Trauma Center with a particular interest in surgical and approach-related complications. Treatment was provided to 523 patients with an acetabular fracture in their Tertiary Referral Hospital from January 2003 to December 2017. Outcomes revealed a high risk for different kinds of complications in patients with acetabular fractures. Neuro-vascular and thromboembolic incidents are the most common risks observed. Surgically treated patients were at increased risk of getting a complication, hence they suggest cautiously considering the indication for surgical treatment and the surgical approach, including individual patient parameters and fracture types and the surgeon's expertise.
