Complications following surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis over a 13-year period
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 03, 2020
Kwan KYH, et al. - This research seeks to assess the incidence and examine the trends of surgeon-reported complications following surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) over a 13-year period from the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Morbidity and Mortality database. The study population consisted of 84,320 patients between 2004 and 2016. Researchers evaluated all individuals with AIS between ten and 18 years of age, entered into the SRS Morbidity and Mortality database between 2004 and 2016. They further investigated all perioperative complications for correlations with correlated factors. Between 2004 to 2007 and 2013 to 2016, complication trends were explored by comparing the cohorts. After surgery for AIS, 1.5% was noted as an overall complication rate, with a reduction of complication rates found in the second period of the analysis.
