Complications and re-operations related to tension band wiring and plate osteosynthesis of olecranon fractures
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Mar 28, 2021
Rantalaiho IK, Laaksonen IE, Ryosa AJ, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate early complications and re-operations and their predictive factors related to those operative methods. Between 2007 and 2017, researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients with an operatively treated olecranon fracture at Turku University Hospital. They recorded reoperations, postoperative complications, and potential risk factors for these. For this analysis, a total of 434 patients were included (387 tension band wiring [TBW] and 47 plate fixation [PF]). This study’s findings reveal that there is a high risk of early complications and re-operations associated with both TBW and PF. The rate of complications in TBW my be reduced by transcortical positioning of Kirschner wires.
