Compliance with cervical cancer screening guidelines in young female patients: Rates and trends of screening in New Haven County, CT

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Aug 27, 2019

Oliveira CR, et al. - Via performing the current analysis, researchers examined the changes in the rates of unindicated cervical cancer screening for adolescents and young adults in response to the release of the 2012 consensus guidelines. From 2 large outpatient gynecology practices (1 academic and 1 community practice) in New Haven County, CT, they reviewed a total of 4,635 screening results (academic: 2,374; community: 2,261). As per the data, there was a decline in the rate of unindicated screening of women < 21 years old following the publishing of consensus guidelines in 2012, especially among community-based providers. Although unclear, these trends could be due to the guideline’s broader dissemination or due to the harmonization of recommendations between multiple professional societies. Despite a substantial decrease in unindicated screening of women < 21 years old, there is room for further improvement concerning the over-use of human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. Findings emphasize the significance of efforts to ensure evidence-based usage of tests as an increase in the incorporation of HPV-based testing and other technologies for cervical cancer screening occurs.
