Competing risks of fracture and death in older adults with chronic kidney disease
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Apr 18, 2018
Hall RK, et al. - Whether chronic kidney disease (CKD) at any stage is related to fracture risk after adjusting for competing mortality was investigated in this prospective cohort study, conducted at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national healthcare system, including men receiving VA primary care aged 65 and older with no history of fracture or osteoporosis therapy. Whether age or race modify the link between CKD and fracture risk was also determined. CKD, including Stage 3, was shown to be related to a moderately greater fracture risk in older male veterans. The link between CKD and fracture risk was not modified by age, race, and bone mineral density. In competing risk models, a trend toward greater hazard for Stage 4 and Stage 5 CKD was seen.
