Comparison of weight bearing functional exercise and non-weight bearing quadriceps strengthening exercise on pain and function for people with knee osteoarthritis and obesity: Protocol for the TARGET randomised controlled trial
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Jun 21, 2019
Bennell KL, et al. - Via a two-arm parallel-groups design, assessor- and participant-blinded randomized controlled trial, 128 participants aged ≥50 years with painful medial knee osteoarthritis (OA, predominantly affecting the medial tibiofemoral compartment, a major public health problem) and obesity, the researchers targeted to determine whether non-weight bearing exercise would be more effective than weight-bearing exercise for clinical benefits. The efficacy of two different 12-week physiotherapist-prescribed, home-based exercise programs for people with medial knee OA and obesity would be compared providing relevant information to help inform exercise prescription in the common OA patient subgroup. Further, greater benefits of non-weight bearing quadriceps strengthening exercise than with weight bearing functional exercise would be either proved or disproved through the hypothesis. Also, for people with medial knee OA and obesity, it would help in exercise prescription recommendations.
