Comparison of the effects of hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration on left ventricular hypertrophy in end‐stage renal disease patients: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Hameed I, Gaudino M, Naik A, et al. - By analyzing 7 relevant studies including overall 845 patients, researchers compared hemodiafiltration (HDF) vs conventional hemodialysis (HD) in terms of efficacy in improving left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), defined as decrease of the left ventricular mass index (LVMi) and raising the ejection fraction (EF). These studies were selected through a systematic literature search. The pooled mean variation between pre‐and post‐procedural LVMi was estimated to be −8.0 g/m2. For HD and HDF, the estimated mean differences between pre‐ and post‐procedural LVMi were −6.7 g/m2 and −9.3 g/m2, respectively, in subgroup analysis. The pooled mean variation between pre‐ and post‐procedural EF was identified to be 2.4%. On subgroup analysis, the mean differences between pre‐ and post‐procedural EF were estimated to be 3.6% for HD and 2.0% for HDF. Age and longer dialysis duration were found to be related to lower mean difference between pre‐and post‐procedural EF, on meta‐regression. With HDF vs conventional HD, no significant impacts on alterations in LVMi and EF were identified.
