Comparison of rupture risk of intracranial aneurysms between familial and sporadic patients
Stroke Jun 04, 2019
Mensing LA, et al. - After identifying 62 familial intracranial aneurysms (IA) patients with 91 unruptured IA (UIA) and 412 sporadic IA patients with 542 UIA, researchers used Cox regression analysis to assess the incidence of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage between familial (defined as ≥2 affected first-degree relatives with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and UIA) vs sporadic patients with UIA. The outcomes infer that for familial vs sporadic IA, a slightly higher risk of aneurysm rupture was apparent, although statistical significance was not seen. However, the risk of rupture appears to be lower than in a previous study. They recommend to treating familial UIA more aggressively based on these outcomes.
